The AI chatbot race is heating up in 2025 as more players enter the scene and shake up the market. While ChatGPT still tops in global market share, its dominance is starting to fade.

According to data presented by Stocklytics.com, as rising competition wins over users, ChatGPT’s market share has slipped by nearly 5% in just two months.

Microsoft Copilot Is Taking the Biggest Bite Out of OpenAI’s Dominance

For more than two years, ChatGPT had been the untouchable king of the AI chatbot space, with little to no real competition in sight. While OpenAI’s chatbot still holds the lion’s share of the market, things started to change significantly in 2025, with more players than ever entering the scene.

As the youngest player in the industry, DeepSeek has undoubtedly shaken up the AI chatbot market. Launched in January, the Chinese app quickly gained traction, prompting OpenAI to roll out rapid updates to ChatGPT and pushing Google to accelerate improvements to Gemini, fueling a race to build the most advanced and widely used chatbot. Yet, it’s not DeepSeek, Gemini, or even Perplexity, the second-largest player, that appears to be chipping away at OpenAI’s dominance. Instead, many users seem to be shifting from ChatGPT to Microsoft Copilot.

Statcounter data shows that ChatGPT’s market share dropped from 84.21% in April to 79.86% in June, marking a considerable 4.35‑point decline in just two months. At the same time, Microsoft Copilot’s share surged by 4.6 points, reaching 4.83% in June. This sharp rise was driven mainly by its seamless integration into everyday Microsoft tools like Windows, Office, Outlook, Excel, and Teams, features rolled out as part of the “Copilot Plus” update. With millions already using Microsoft 365, these built-in AI tools made it easy for both individuals and businesses to adopt Copilot without changing platforms.

Most other major players also saw a dip in market share during this period. Perplexity held 11% of the AI chatbot market in June, down roughly one percentage point from April. Google Gemini experienced a much smaller decline, slipping just 0.12 points to 2.19%. On the other hand, DeepSeek saw a slight gain of 0.14%, bringing its total market share to 1.02%.

ChatGPT Took the Hardest Hit in the U.S., Losing Over 10% of the Market in Two Months

StatCounter also revealed some interesting regional insights into ChatGPT’s declining trend. While OpenAI’s chatbot lost 4.3%% of its global market share, there are significant regional differences.

Statistics show ChatGPT took the hardest hit in the United States, where its market share dipped by a massive 10.12% in just two months, while Microsoft Copilot’s surged by 10.68% in the same period.  Europe saw a similar pattern, with ChatGPT losing nearly 6% of the market and Copilot gaining over 7%. In contrast, Asia proved to be ChatGPT’s most resilient region, with its market share falling by just 2.5%.
